What do you like the most about IKEA as an employer?

IKEA provides the background of a strong company being helpful and fair to its co-workers who have many opportunities to find their role in different spheres. I like the fact that it is always possible to speak about everything not only with my superior but also with the director or other managers. It’s not unusual to see the director or someone from the company management selling products in or helping at the check-out. I can’t imagine this happening elsewhere. There are many reasons why I’m still very happy at IKEA even after all those years.

What do you appreciate the most, where do you think IKEA offers more advantages and support to its 50+ co-workers compared with other employers?

At IKEA it’s not your age but your abilities and skills that matter. You can be sure that although over 50 you can still be beneficial to your employer. I’m not afraid I might lose my job because of my age. At IKEA all without exception have the chance to develop and grow and it depends only on their abilities and effort.

What were your biggest worries when you were new in your position that turned out to be pointless later?

Everything was perfectly new for me, so I did worry. I was nervous about my new job and my ability to gel with quite a big collective and cope well in my new position. However, I soon ceased to worry as I felt support from all around me – superior, all my new colleagues and the HR department.

Where do you think you have the advantage compared to your younger colleagues?

I have had some experience, I’m loyal and I appreciate a good job. I don’t have to look after small children anymore although that also could be balanced with work at IKEA thanks to the possibility of part time jobs, etc. That definitely is another advantage offered by IKEA.

Tell them not to worry about anything and be themselves, although I know that being nervous may play a part. And I would certainly recommend IKEA.

Personally I don’t see my age as an obstacle when performing my profession but rather as an advantage. Thanks to my long experience I can easily help customers and give some advice to my younger colleagues. So I think and feel that thanks to my age I can contribute to the company.

What would you recommend to someone at your age who is thinking about working at IKEA or is preparing for a recruitment process at IKEA?

Some people may worry that they learn and get used to new things more slowly. This worry, however, is futile. Just don’t be afraid, come and try it. Be yourself, don’t pretend. Every piece of experience counts and if you haven’t succeeded today, you may succeed tomorrow.
